The 2023/2024 basketball teams have begun practicing and we are looking forward to a great season. We anticipate some tough competition, exciting games and notable skill development throughout the season.

Congratulations to all of the students who chose to play basketball and are working hard to prepare for the season. It’s a complex sport and requires much hard work, but our coaches are knowledgeable, dedicated and will do their best to prepare your student for the next level.

Any questions can be directed to the child’s coach, or the SMS Athletic Directors (Al Thiessen, Connor Wiebe) at or

Volleyball Coaches:
Grade 7 Girls – Yasmeen Bouseri and Cassandra Taylor
Grade 7 Boys – Carson Edwards and ???
Grade 8 Girls – Rita Rebizant and Meagan Klippenstein
Grade 8 Boys – Al Thiessen and ???

As you can see, we need assistant coaches for both of our boys teams. Interested???

SMS does ask that all participating students pay a user fee that is used to pay for officiating at HSD tournaments and banner costs. Additional funds will be collected if the student needs to buy a team jersey (to be kept by the student).

The fee for basketball is $40 for grade 8s and $30 for grade 7s for the 2023 season.
Teams will order uniform shirts for an additional $25 per player. Players who already own a shirt need not order a new one.

The 2024 season begins the week of January 23 and continues for six weeks, followed by play-offs for grade 8 teams.
Girls teams play on Tuesday evenings, boys teams on Thursday evenings (with a small possibility of the occasional Wednesday night game).

The practice schedule can be found on the SMS website.

Please note that HSD buses will be used exclusively for game transportation. Parents can bring their own student to and from games but may not offer transportation to other students.

Permission forms must be signed on the school website as well while fees can be paid to your child’s coach or through the parent portal.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. We look forward to seeing you at our games.

Al Thiessen,
SMS Athletic Director
